ROLE: JUSTICE TECHNOLOGIST WITH FEMINIST AI

Full-Time Remote Justice Technologist with Feminist AI

Overview

Feminist AI™, a non-profit organization working to make AI more accessible, and amplify unheard voices in the tech community, is seeking a technologist with skills in data science and machine learning to conduct research and data collection for critical and speculative design projects. 

The technologist would be responsible for co-creating Feminist AI™ projects with the goal of furthering more equitable emerging technology practices, using the tool poieto, a collaborative design methodology for social tech projects. 

The Feminist AI™ community is comprised of individuals with varying levels of experience with artificial intelligence, all with the mission of working collaboratively to make AI thinking accessible to all. At Feminist AI™, we believe individuals affected by technologies should be designing and making the technologies they use. All of our projects are critical and collaborative, meaning everyone at Feminist AI™ has a voice in all phases of project development and execution. The ideal candidate would share in our commitment to AI design that centers unheard voices in the tech community, and the desire to work in a collaborative environment.  

Responsibilities

  • Continuing our critical AI practices - through critical data collection, cleaning, and model training

  • Continuing work on our ongoing and past Feminist AI projects (around 5). Our most recent project focuses on Art-Search, inspired by the work Algorithms of Oppression by Professor Safiya Noble.

  • Prioritizing Feminist AI™ projects based on time and feasibility in collaboration with the Feminist.AI community

  • Engaging directly with Feminist AI™ community via outreach and weekly Feminist.AI meetings

  • Scoping project requirements

  • Co-leading and participating in workshops

  • Co-presenting at conferences and talks

Necessary Qualifications 

  • Experience with data and tech projects, in either a personal or professional capacity

  • Proven interest in and commitment to social justice and equitable tech 

  • Flexibility and critical thinking skills to adapt to projects based on F.AI community needs 

  • Curiosity and willingness to learn

  • Ability to work collaboratively and engage in group decision making

Useful Qualifications  

  • Knowledge of Unity, Javascript, Python, p5.js/Processing and AI sandboxing.

Volunteering with Feminist AI™

Feminist AI™ is a small but passionate not-for-profit organization. We depend on the generosity of volunteers to help us carry out our work. As a team, we strive to co-create a healthy, flexible environment and make collective decisions together. To learn more about our history and philosophy, click here.

Volunteers are encouraged to participate in weekly team meetings if schedules allow, with the expectation that role-specific tasks are completed on your own time. Volunteers will receive support from fellow Feminist AI™ team members and report to our Volunteer Manager.

Volunteers will be provided with opportunities such as: networking with the Feminist AI™ community, participating in events and programs, creating year-long AI-related Art and Social Technology projects, learning about the design and development of social AI projects and products, giving/receiving mentorship, and more.
