Encoding Futures Workshop

November 14, 2021

Join us as we explore the social implications of search, in conjunction with Oxy Arts.

Workshop Information

Sunday, November 14, 2021, 2-4pm PST

Location: Oxy Arts, 4757 York Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA

This workshop was held at Oxy Arts at Occidental College in conjunction with their exhibition Encoding Futures: Critical Imaginaries of AI.

This workshop is a part of Feminist.AI and poieto’s larger Search programming, Encode series (2019-present). Participants will come together to re-imagine “Search” through discussion and prototyping. The workshop draws inspiration from Professor Safiya U. Noble’s 2018 book, Algorithms of Oppression, which critiques the racist and sexist search results about marginalized groups online, and the algorithms that continue to propagate, and profit from, these misrepresentations.

In our workshop, we will utilize poieto, a collaborative design tool for emerging technologies, to guide participants in envisioning a future of search, outside of detrimental algorithmic bias.

This workshop continues the work of our Encode series, Search, which celebrates the work of Professor Safiya U. Noble and her book Algorithms of Oppression. In searching for the future of gender, we will continue to explore themes around gender and search, as well as dedicate time to our past and ongoing projects focused on search.

Members of Feminist.AI and poieto will present on current and past Search projects and lead participants in a community conversation, exploring the ideas of a future outside of the gender binary.

Current and ongoing projects include:

  • Art-Search, a Feminist AI™ + poieto project utilizing archival video footage and machine learning

  • Feminist-Search, a project exploring what a search engine with a feminist foundation might look like.

Upcoming search projects:

  • A project revisiting Search questions we generated from RightsCon 2020-2021

  • A project exploring Palestinian Histories and landmarks through artist gabbah baya’s video game “RETURN

  • Searching for the Future of Love with Ivana Coleman, exploring the intimacy between the physical and the digital.
